Lisa Murphy: The Adventurer With A Big Heart

Posted by John Feeney on

A want to reconnect with other like-minded people and see more women in the outdoors led to Lisa Murphy founding the South Australian outdoor hiking company Big Heart Adventures.

An idea that came to Lisa in 2015, Big Heart Adventures is an all encompassing adventure company whose target audience is predominantly female.

"I had the idea a little over two years ago...and I want to create these (outdoor) experiences for women specifically," Lisa says.

"A lot of women just don't think they can do this stuff and i just knew that if I could create an entry level experience and itinerary that was achievable, and if I put training experiences in and had this holistic approach to making a trip happen, then I could do it through Big Heart Adventures."

Offering guided tours in Adelaide, Big Heart Adventure's signature trek is the Queen Charlotte Track in New Zealand.

"That's a multi day walk that allows first time hikers to carry a day pack and have their luggage transferred if need be," she says.

"If they're not feeling up to walking because of injury of illness there's a water taxi service and a variety of other back-up options which, I feel, for a first timer can be a huge relief.

"So I've created the trips around that and I did my first (Queen Charlotte Track) trip last year and did my first return trip a few weeks ago now.

"Both trips have been very successful and I can definitely see them having a place in the outdoor industry, as well as regular tours through Big Heart Adventures."

Aside from local hikes around Adelaide and hikes in New Zealand, Big Heart Adventures also offers other international hikes in places such as Nepal, Peru and Bhutan.

These trips are a combination of female only and mixed groups and are guided by local guides due to these being specialist locations.

As an added service for the treks, Big Heart Adventures holds regular training hikes that begin 8-10 weeks in the lead up to the multi-day hike they have booked.

These training hikes are held on weekend's and often include both days so Lisa's clients can get an idea of what it is like to hike on consecutive days.

"We offer that for the women's trips but if they are going on a non-guided trek, we also have self directed training programs," she says.

"We work closely with a personal trainer here in Adelaide who has put together trip specific plans for our hikes which is very handy.

"We also have a lot of people who do come on trips who aren't from Adelaide and we want to be able to give them some guidance on what they should be doing each week, but ultimately it is up to them."

Globewalker is proud to be associated with Big Heart Adventures and to celebrate this partnership, all Globewalker customers who spend $100 with us will receive $100 off any Kangaroo Island Wise Women Walking tours run by Big Heart Adventures, as well their 2017 Himalayan Soul Revival trek in Nepal.
